Surgery

At Oberlin Animal Hospital, we perform surgery four days a week. Our fully equipped surgery suite offers ample lighting, a heated surgery table for greater pet comfort, the option of laser surgery for certain procedures, close monitoring during anesthesia with pulse oximetry and direct supervision by our trained staff.

We also have the ability to monitor blood pressure and ECG for higher-risk procedures, for example, those older pets with heart and circulatory disease. In addition, we tailor the anesthetic protocol to each individual pet based on a number of risk factors, including age, breed, and prior history. The safest gas anesthesia, sevoflurane, is often used in those pet’s deemed “high-risk”, at no additional cost to the client.

Although we recommend blood testing prior to anesthesia (in order to detect problems with the liver or kidneys that may affect you pet’s ability to metabolize sedatives and anesthetic medications), we do not make it a requirement. Our in-house lab is fully equipped to run complete blood counts, chemistry panels, thyroid and cortisol tests and electrolyte panels. These are offered for every surgical procedure at an additional charge.

Laser Surgery

Long used in human health care, laser surgery has proven to be a safe and effective option for surgery. In recent years, this safer and least-painful option has become available for animals as well. Oberlin Animal Hospital is proud to offer this service.

Laser surgery is a preferred option for many procedures, such as:

  • Cyst removal
  • De-claw
  • Soft palate procedures
  • Tumor removal
  • Removal of skin tags and more

Your doctor will discuss with you whether laser surgery is the best option for your pet.

How Laser Surgery Works

In laser surgery, an extremely intense beam of light replaces the traditional scalpel. Laser energy vaporizes the water in the tissues and allows it to remove extremely small areas, while instantly sealing nerve endings and blood vessels as it goes. This means less pain, less bleeding, and less overall trauma for the patient than traditional surgery.

Surgery Prep

1.

Do not feed your pet after midnight the night before the procedure. Water should be available to your pet at all times, unless water deprivation is specifically instructed by your veterinarian.

2.

Surgery drop off is between 7:30am and 8:30am. Patients admitted for routine surgical procedures usually go home the same day. A pick up time will be scheduled when you are dropping your pet off in the morning. Please allow a few minutes in the morning to fill out surgical admission paperwork, and please provide a phone number where you can be reached that day should an emergency arise.

3.

Feel free to call during the day to check on your pet’s status. Most surgeries are completed by 3pm. We usually will not call you unless there is a problem. That is why we schedule a pick up time at the time of admission, to avoid any confusion about when your pet might be ready to go home. Sometimes patients are recovered and ready before their scheduled pick up time, and we are happy to accommodate an “early pick up” if you call and check on your pet after 3pm and they are ready to go.

Benefits of Laser Surgery

1. Extreme Precision

Due to the exceptionally small focus of the laser, your surgeon is able to target only the affected tissue and leave the surrounding healthy tissue untouched.

2. Less swelling

Because only light contacts the tissue, swelling is minimal.

3. Reduced risk of infection

The high heat of the laser actually destroys bacteria and micro-organisms as it goes, reducing risk of infection.

4. Quicker recovery

Laser surgery reduces the discomfort your pet feels after surgery, and speeds her return to normal life.
